Mad River Estuary

An accessible bluff top trail fits elegantly into the marine terrace above the Mad River on property owned by the McKinleyville Public Services District.  The trail will be developed in concert with an extensive wetland and habitat restoration. The new trail will connect with the Hammond Coastal Trail via the School Road Trail as part of a regional trail network, providing access to a variety of habitats and coastal resources.  The new trail will provide public access through a spacious open meadow with stunning views across the riverine coastal landscape to two overlooks with benches, picnic tables, and interpretive exhibits. A planned future extension will provide access down to the river at a small canoe and kayak launch site.
