Berkeley’s bustling 4th Street commercial district has a new paseo connecting 5th and 4th Streets, infusing life into the block between University and Hearst Avenues. New and remodeled storefronts, maker shacks, restaurants, lush plantings, seating, and an outdoor movie wall line the cobbled pedestrian way under a corten arbor frame. Including renovation of the venerable Spenger’s Seafood Restaurant and a 105-car parking lot, green infrastructure integrates public gathering with sand-set permeable cobbles, seat-wall flow-thru planters, and bioswale treatment.
